Glorious Twelfth

The first day of the shooting season is upon us! The Glorious twelfth! The reports say it’s going to be a brilliant season despite the weather we’ve had.

Shooting has long been a tradition in my family. I particularly remember the build up to the start of the season. My father telling us about how the Game Act of 1831 made it illegal to shoot out of season and sharing his tips on how to hit a fast grouse.

By far the most dangerous aspect of shooting is trying to avoid being hit by other members of the shooting party. I have a friend who is marvellous fun to be around normally, but I wouldn’t risk going shooting with him. He’s what we call a ‘loose cannon’.

This season I am hoping to beat my score from last year. I came back with six brace after only the first drive! Something I haven’t let the chaps forget easily.

One of my favourite aspects of shooting season is the food. The grouse itself makes a marvellous main, especially roasted young grouse, suitably cooked by the awesome Valentine Warner.
